Collection of material relating to Rockwell Kent and the Lakeside Press edition of Moby Dick, Chicago and Ausable Forks, New York, 1928-1930.

"I have never before had any part in the making of so beautiful a book. It is finer that I thought it could possibly be and I feel that whatever qualities it has, which entirely suprass my anticipations, are entirely due to you and Mr. Kittredge and the Lakeside Press" (Rockwell Kent, typed letter signed to C.G. Littell, 19 November 1930). This substantial collection was gathered by the publisher, C.G. Littell, and the ephemera occasionally bear his pencil notes.

Includes: Three typed letters signed from Kent to Littell, 1928-1930; a printed dinner invitation and other ephemera for the "Christening of 'Moby Dick'," 5 December 1930, with pencil note by Littell: "At this meeting, attended in a body by the Caxton Club, we burnt all books over 1000 copies; representing a sales value over 8000.00;" a calling card for Littell with design by Kent; proof prints of the Moby-Dick title-pages and a few other illustrations; prospectuses and catalogues for all "Four American Books," the others being the Lakeside Press editions of Poe's Tales, Dana's Two Years Before the Mast, and Thoreau's Walden; an etched logo designed by Stephen Gooden; five autograph letters signed by Frances Kent to C.G. Littell, [1930]. Housed together in contemporary quarter roan slipcase, gilt-lettered on spine "Four American Books" (wear to slipcase).
