Lot Essay

Neil Pittaway is a printmaker, painter and draughtsman. His highly detailed and often chaotic etchings and watercolours hark back to an earlier age of industrial and commercial development. Urban architecture, landscape, travel, discovery, the enlightenment, Gothic revival, satire and historical narratives shape and inform the complex labyrinth of ideas and visual images that are typical of Neil’s drawn and printed works. Pittaway is a member of the the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). His work is in public collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Bankside Gallery, RWS & RE Collections, London, V &A and St. Paul’s Cathedral Library, London.

Albion’s Jerusalem refers to London at the heart of England. The work is based on some of the sights of London and is a visual history, including a transcription from the work of James Gillray.
