Lot Essay

For more than forty years, Ken Burns has produced and directed some of America’s most acclaimed documentaries. Known for his use of archival footage and photographs in his films, Burns' canon is no better represented than in his 2019 eight-part PBS series "Country Music". Chronicling the history and prominence of country music in American culture, this series truly demonstrates how the music has always been an amalgam, springing from many different areas and cultures and culminating in the country music we listen to and love to this day.

This limited run poster, made exclusively for the production team of "Country Music", features world renowned country music artist Johnny Cash in 1972 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, captured by photographer Les Leverett. From 1952-1956, Les Leverett worked for Nashville’s Associated Photographers and in 1960 he was hired to be the staff photographer for the Grand Ole Opry. Leverett spent the next 32 years recording images of nearly every country star as the visual historian for WSM-TV (now WSMV) and WSM radio. He also photographed the "Johnny Cash Show" during what many consider to be the “golden age of country”.
