The drawing is an interpretation in color of a work by Holbein, known from a contemporary copy at the Kunstmuseum Basel, inv. (C. Müller, op. cit., no. 143, pl. 44). Another version, dated to the late 16th Century, is at the Morgan Library & Museum (inv. 1982.7). The present drawing has been attributed to the Zürich artist Dietrich Meyer the Elder (1572-1658). Christian von Mechel included a print showing (in reverse) the same composition in a collection of plates after Holbein published in 1790.
