Lot Essay

This print by the Antwerp engraver Peeter Clouwet (or Pieter Clouet) is based on Rubens' altar painting, created around 1617 for the high altar of the Capuchin monastery in Lille. The painting is today in the city's Palais des Beaux-Arts. Clouwet followed Rubens' composition quite closely and only allowed a few small changes, such as the omission of the elderly woman standing in the left foreground.
