Lot Essay

The present lot recalls motifs from Ancient Rome and Greece, made popular by Thomas Hope’s Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. A similar frieze mount depicting winged creatures flanking a central font is illustrated on plate 15, and a further design for a fireplace mounted on the cormers with similar profiles of Grecian heads is illustrated on plate 25. The central frieze also resembles an etching of ancient Rome by Charles Heathcote Tatham’s, first published between 1794-1796, plate 77 (illustrated in the online collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art).
