Lot Essay

The Ref. 3770/1 rightly earns the nickname “Nautillepse” given that it looks like a cross between two successful Patek Philippe models, the Nautilus and the Ellipse. Launched in 1980, the Ref. 3770/1 was launched in a variety of versions and was designed to extend the classic Ellipse model into the burgeoning sports watch category. While the Nautilus was considered too ungainly for some in the 1970s, the slim "Nautillepse" - with its quartz-powered movement - was meant to appeal to a broader audience. However with the mechanical watch renaissance in the late 1980s, this reference’s popularity waned and it was eventually discontinued in the 1990s.
