Lot Essay

The remarkable and ingenious Ressence Type 3 took several years of research and development before it was perfected. The model has been described as being entirely based on applied science and is without doubt one of the most fascinating timepieces of recent years. The present watch is a key piece of the model, with case no. 1 and a grey dial, it is one of the most important examples of a Ressence Type 3 to be offered at auction. Moreover, it is offered complete with the full set of box and accessories and represents a true prize for the collector of contemporary independent watchmaking.

Taking traditional watchmaking to a new level with the accent on comfort, the 44 mm diameter Type 3 comprises 376 components and is made from Grade 5 titanium sandwiched between sapphire crystal glasses, it is very lightweight at around 79 grams. The mechanical caliber is housed in the lower half of the case, the upper half is filled with 3.75 ml of oil and houses the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System, magnetic transmission is employed to connect the two separate entities. A system of Seven Bellows compensates for oil volume changes due to temperature variations. The Ressence Type 3 has exceptional optical properties and is legible from every possible angle, and thanks to reduced friction its timekeeping ability is enhanced. A gravitational gear system allows the back chamber to carry out all necessary functions by simply turning the Type 3 over. With the dial facing up, you can adjust all the displays, and with the dial facing down you can wind the watch.

The dial display can be explained as follows: on the outer circumference of the dial is a 31-day date ring which rotates to line up the current day with the orange arrow at 6 o'clock. Concentric is the rotating minutes scale, with the largest indicator hand. In the centre are three smaller dials for the hours with the Ressence ‘hand’ logo at 12 o'clock, the seconds indication has numerals from 1 to 6, and the day of the week indicator with an orange indicator hand.

RESSENCE
Founded in 2010 by Benoît Mintiens in Antwerp, Belgium. The brand name is taken from the words ‘Renaissance’ and ‘essence’. The Ressence brand was launched at Baselworld in 2010, where 3 prototypes were displayed. In early 2011, the first series of 50 watches, christened "Zero Series" was launched. In spring 2012 the "Series One" was introduced. This latter series was an upgrade to the zero series, this time without screws to hold the back sapphire, downturned lugs and a shock absorption system, small changes were also made to the time module. The Zero Series watches were assembled by VRJ in Waterloo, Belgium. For the assembly of Series One, Ressence started working with Montres Ludovic Ballouard in Geneva. The third series, "Type 3", was introduced at Baselworld in 2013. Being one of the first watches to be made without a crown, CBS News's Techcrunch reported on the new model as a possible future direction in watches.
