Sale Overview
This June, Christie’s presents the collection of celebrated Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and his violinist wife Alice Harnoncourt, featuring fine and decorative European art from over five centuries. As passionate and curious collectors, for Nikolaus and Alice Harnoncourt collecting was a shared passion that lasted their entire sixty-three year marriage, in which they only ever spent fourteen days apart.
Covering Old Master paintings, early European furniture and sculpture, and porcelain, many of the lots come with fascinating provenances including the Rothschild family, Alfred Cortot, Yves Saint Laurent and J. P. Morgan.
The sale encompasses the shared vision of how the Harnoncourts wished to live their lives – surrounded by intelligence, beauty and music.
Further works from the Harnoncourt Collection will be sold in the Old Master Evening Sale, London on 6 July 2023.
