Lot Essay

Caligo’s accurate depictions of these two rooms in Palazzo Pitti allows us to recognize some of the Renaissance masterpieces exhibited on the walls. Perugino’s Lamentation is at the center of the main wall in the Sala di Saturno, flanked by two canvases respectively by Raphael and Fra Bartolommeo. The Assumption of the Virgin by Andrea del Sarto is depicted on the left wall in the Sala dell’Iliade.
