HENRY JAMES HOLIDAY (BRITISH, 1839-1927)
The Duet: Portraits of Alexandra, daughter of Rev. G. Kitchin and Winifrid, daughter of the painter
Holiday's daughter Winifrid (1866-1949) became a violinist and violin teacher, alongside her work as a suffragette. Alexandra Kitchin (1864-1912) was named after her god-mother Alexandra of Denmark (then Princess of Wales), and was also the subject of at least five photographs by Lewis Carroll aged between four and sixteen. Reverend Dr George William Kitchin (1827-1912) was the first Chancellor of the University of Durham and Dean of Winchester, and a friend of Carroll and John Ruskin, as well as Holiday.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The sheet is laid down around the edges onto a foamex board. There are some old scattered scratches and surface abrasions, probably as the result of a previous glass breaking. The lower left corner has been made up (overframed). The colours are good, with some slight losses to the more delicate pigments, and the sheet reads well and could be hung without further attention.
