DAVIS, Paul (b.1938)

Thelonious Monk, original cover artwork for the 1966 Riverside Records double compilation album The Thelonious Monk Story, oil on board, signed by the artist lower right recto, 400 x 380mm, framed (496 x 478 mm).

American graphic artist and illustrator Paul Davis studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York before joining Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast at Push Pin Studios. His bold, painterly portraits were soon in high demand for magazine illustrations, record album covers, book jackets and advertisements, leading him to open Paul Davis Studios in 1963. As well as The Thelonious Monk Story, he also created the album cover art for Monk albums Solo Monk and Monk’s Blues, released by Columbia Records in 1965 and 1968 respectively.
