A SET OF FIVE ENGLISH (HERCULANEUM) CREAMWARE DUTCH-DECORATED 'PRODIGAL SON' PLATES
The present five plates are missing a sixth companion, ZYN UITTOGT ('his departure'), depicting the second scene in the parable. A similar set of six Dutch-decorated English creamware plates painted with the complete set of scenes was sold by Christie's, London, 18 November 1999, lot 14, and a slightly earlier example in Leeds creamware with Dutch decoration was sold by Christie's, London, 21 January 2003, lot 131.

With flakes, scratches, wear and losses to the enamels throughout; the edges with small and shallow chips, some restuck, the most prominent chips to the 'ZYN VREUGT' plate; the 'ZYN VREUGT' also with several hairline cracks encircling the center; scattered areas of crazing and scattered dark hairlines and glaze lines; the 'ZYN BEROUW' plate with a hairline crack from the 12:30 position into the center.
