Sale Overview

From 9–22 November, Christie’s Paris will hold the online sale of the Bayreuth Collection of gold boxes. This sale follows on from that of the silver collection sold in London in July and is the first one of its kind at Christie’s Paris.

Comprising some 130 boxes and objects of vertu, the group offers a unique glimpse into the creativity of the gold box makers in Europe during the 18th and 19th century. Acquired over the last 40 years, the collection has been formed under the disciplined and passionate eye of a collector with boundless energy and enthusiasm. It displays a deep interest in craftsmanship and materials. The collection also offers a panorama of gold boxes and objects of vertu through time and location, demonstrating the evolution of shapes, styles and functions.

Highlights include striking hardstones boxes such as the Austrian gold mounted hardstones (enlever) cabinet bonbonniere by Johann Georg Aigner, Vienna, 1793 and Pierre Drais’ ‘Butterfly’ box dated 1780-1781. The collection also includes two novelty shaped lacquer boxes: Noel Hardivilliers ‘trunk’ box dated 1733-1734 and Daniel Gouers ‘Lotus’ box dated 1732-1738. Also offered are Swiss made work such as musical boxes as well as a fabulous enamelled gold snuff-box by Bautte et Compagnie adorned with a very fine micromosaic signed by the Roman artist Barberi and a charming miniature herbarium pendant.
