This handsome bookcase is in overall good condition. There are the normal marks, scratches, light cracks and wear consistent with age and use. Some evidence of historic woodworm, now dormant. Some light warping to the sides. Some marks to the top. Some minor hairline cracks to the veneers, particularly to the doors. Glass appears original. Some tarnishing to the brass handles. Some stains to the right hand side of the secretaire drawer. Restored strip of veneer to top of lower section. Small loss to the moulding of the right cupboard door at the top. A larger crack to the bottom right of the left cupboard door. Some small separation to the central panel of the cupboard doors due to movement consistent with age. A vertical crack measuring 12 inches to the lower section of the left side. The bookcase displays idiosyncratic attributes of Thomas Chippendale's workshop with laminated blocks to the feet, red wash, short grain kickers, chamfered drawer stops and quality of mahogany that is typical of Chippendale's output.
