The colorful decoration on this pair of jars is inspired by Japanese Kangxi porcelain. The Samson manufactory designed variations of this popular model and a photograph of a nearly identical example is preserved in the Archives de la Manufacture Nationale de Sévres (M.N.S.) referred to as pot à tabac Lelong (see F. Slitine, Samson genie de l’imitation, Paris, 2002, p. 167). Though the present lot does not bear markings for a bronzier, a nearly identical pair sold Sotheby's, New York, 25 April 2012, lot 169, were signed by Maison Millet who appears to have frequently mounted Samson porcelain objects. A single vase of the same model as the present lot was part of the Levy Collection, Sotheby’s, Paris, 12 October 2008, lot 12 (24,750EUR). Related vases were sold at Christie’s, New York, 9 June 2014, lot 303 ($37,500) and another pair of same taste, Christie’s, London, 6 March 2014 lot 192 (£40,000).
