Lot Essay
Yuan Shun’s paintings of imaginary worlds are surreal yet eerily convincing. Inspired by his interests in philosophy as well as strategic thinking, Yuan Shun creates his works as if they were windows into the imaginative worlds that stretch beyond the canvas. Best known for his mist-shrouded dioramas, Yuan forms an artistic expression that is uniquely his own.
In Untitled, Yuan builds a chaotic world through the myriad of colored scribbles, lines and brushstrokes. With the different colors and media, the world seems to be impenetrable, flat and incomprehensible. Yet, characteristic to Yuan’s work and aligning with the Chinese traditions of classical landscape paintings, he marks a path for the viewers to journey through. In this work, the rectangular window in the center becomes the starting point for this experience.
