Lot Essay

This work relates to the picture, also referred to as the Montalto Madonna, now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG6597), though omits the Infant Saint John, who stands to the left of the Madonna in the original composition. We are grateful to Daniele Benati for proposing the attribution on the basis of photographs.
