The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This pair of unlined canvases remain stable on their stretchers. In raking light, there is some visible abrasion to the canvas where it has been resting on the stretcher, along with abrasion along the edges of both works, associated with frame wear. Ultraviolet examination reveals an old layer of varnish, with restored damage to the upper centre of the first picture and some infilling in the craquelure in the lower right and in the centre left. Similar infilling of the craquelure can be seen in the second painting, with some restoration of the lowlights and isolated and scattered restoration throughout the horses in the battle scene. The artist’s painterly technique remains highly appreciable.
