Lot Essay

One of Germany’s most celebrated contemporary sculptors, Stephan Balkenhol trained at the Hamburg School of Fine Art from 1976 until 1982, where he was exposed to Minimalism and Conceptualism by his tutors Nam June Paik and Sigmar Polke. In reaction to what he perceived as the absence of figuration in Contemporary art at the time, Balkenhol began to reintroduced the human figure into his works, The present work comprises a portrait of a man embossed from un-inked carved wood block, and hand-coloured by the artist.
