The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The surface is stable and there is light surface dirt present. The canvas has been glue relined and the reverse of the head area has an area of wax lining. There is an old layer of varnish and some lines of craquelure have developed, most distinct in the light colors of the background. Under UV light inspection, there are small areas of retouching at the lower right and left edges. There are areas of retouching in the sky and spots in his hand. There are a spots around the hairline, right eye, mustache, neck and collar area.
