Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008)
On the corruption of Russian technical language. 1965
Autograph letter signed to Tatian Grigorievna [Vinokur], Ryazan, 7 November 1965.

In Russian. Two pages, 202 x 145mm. Envelope.

On the corruption of Russian technical language. Solzhenitsyn expresses thanks for an article by Vinokur, about the language of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, which is 'not only flattering to me, but also very precious, touching upon the most difficult and interesting things that the story had to offer'; he goes on to express his 'deep conviction that in general in the Russian technical language and particularly in the field of literary criticism it is quite possible to express oneself in a transparently Russian way using foreign terminology as moderately as possible, only the most necessary. I am convinced that it is fully possible to find a worthy replacement for expressions such as "expressively-stylistically interpreted"... '.

The impoverishment of the Russian language, both by contamination through foreign vocabulary and the wasting away of its own resources, was a major preoccupation of Solzhenitsyn's at this time.
