Christie’s Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts including Americana auction will take place online from 13-27 June in New York. Sale highlights include a magnificent first edition copy of Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands; an extremely rare, fully hand-colored first edition of Karl Bodmer's atlas of the American West, Reise in das innere Nord-America in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834; the Alfred T. White copy of the rare 1643 New Englands First Fruits, promoting the fledgling Boston colony, as well as containing the first printed description of Harvard; an autograph letter signed from Alan Turing to a promising student; the editio princeps of Theodore Gaza's Greek grammar—one of the first works of the Aldine press, a cornerstone of Aldus's printing program and with his own post-press manuscript corrections; the only surviving example of a highly important broadside proclaiming Henry VIII’s supremacy over the Church and upholding the repudiation of the Pope; a rare manuscript fragment from William Faulkner, as well as one of the earliest known portraits of him; a letter from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to Timothy Leary referencing "Come Together" as the psychedelic advocate's 1970 California gubernatorial campaign; and a signed typescript of Bob Dylan's 1976 song "Joey" inscribed to actor Jerry Orbach. Historical Americana features documents and letters by Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant, as well as significant letters by Signer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Nelson Jr. concerning the siege of Yorktown. The sale is rounded out with a large selection of early printing; ornithology and color-plate books from the Collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman; literary classics from authors such as Shakespeare, Milton, Melville, and Oscar Wilde; and manuscripts from a wide variety of figures including Einstein, Gandhi, and more.
