Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts Including Americana brings together a superb selection of material, including early printed books, important works of science, travel and literature, 19th- and 20th-century American historical documents and more.
Headlining the auction is Valuable Books in the History of Astronomy from the Collection of Jay M. Pasachoff, featuring a fine and unpressed first edition of Newton’s Principia, a first edition of Kepler’s masterpiece Astronomia Nova, and a first edition of Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius as its top lots.
This is followed by Rare Books from the Collection of Rudy Ruggles, Jr., which includes the hand-coloured Perrette copy of Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum, a handsome first edition of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, and a first edition of Hooke’s Micrographia, with contemporary binding and provenance.
Other highlights include property from the Estate of Goodman Basil Espy, a fine copy of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, and letters from Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain.
