Sale Overview
This stunning single-owner sale is a small selection from a true wine lover’s cellar that has been carefully collected for many decades. What stands out is not only the sourcing but also the singular storage conditions of the wines. The collector has a dedication to detail which one rarely sees. The cellar lies deep below the owner’s magnificent alpine home, hewn directly from the Kitzbuhel granite – it is one of the finest cellars Christie’s specialists have ever seen. The wines have rested there, undisturbed in the cool air until release to Christie’s. This stable, cold temperature has slowed the maturation process and resulted in mature wines in impeccably fresh condition.
The collector, a highly successful and well-travelled businessman, has an impressive understanding of the great wines of the world. This sale selection reflects that, with the finest wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Champagne, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia and Madeira represented. Highlights include legendary first growth vintages such as Lafite 1982, Margaux 1983 and Haut Brion 1989, incredibly rare DRC Assortments from 1984 to 1986 in original wooden case, Jaboulet Hermitage La Chappelle from the iconic 1990 vintage, Salon from the 1980s, Gaja Barbaresco Sori Tildin 1989, Vega Sicilia Unico from the 1960s to 1990s, mature Penfolds Grange from the 1970s, and an exquisite collection of Madeira spanning almost three centuries from 1789 to 1969, including, for example, the mythic 1795 Barbeito Terrantez.
