First American edition, in original wrappers. Melville's second book, the sequel to Typee, is scarce in wrappers in any condition. ABPC records only two copies selling at auction in the last twenty years. BAL 13656.

Two volumes, octavo. Half-titles; frontispiece map in vol. 1; 18 pp. of ads at rear of vol. 2 (some foxing internally). Printed wrappers (soiling, spines worn with some loss, rear cover of vol. 2 and final 8 pp. of ads lacking). Custom chemise and slipcase. Provenance: deleted name to cover of vol. 1. – Thomas W. Chrystie (inscription dated January 1848).
