Christie’s is honoured to present an extraordinary historical artefact: Muhammad Ali’s draft card.

Issued in early 1967, the card marks a pivotal moment in Ali’s public resistance to the Vietnam War, setting in motion his famous refusal to be inducted into the United States Armed Forces. The first major public figure to take such a stand, Ali helped galvanise the growing anti-war movement.

By taking this step, Ali not only faced criminal charges and imprisonment but was also stripped of his boxing titles, depriving him of his livelihood for four years. This would prove to be his longest — and greatest — fight.
