Lot Essay

This painting was inspired by the Folkloric dances the artist watched in the Palacio de Bellas Artes during her trip to Mexico City. The radiance of the dancer’s dress combined with her shining smile conveys joy, passion and positivity. The Mariachis dance and play their instruments in the background, creating animated music as the dancer mesmerizes the audience with her femininity and cultural grace. The vibrancy of life is contrasted with the absence of sunlight and the presence of the moon. The haunting shadows remind us of “El dia de los muertos”, one of Mexico’s most celebrated holidays, which celebrates loved ones who have passed away. The painting aims to give a true sense of the beauty of the Mexican culture, not only through flamboyant colours, music and rejoicing, but also through a certain spiritual appreciation.

Beatrice Bragho (b. 1985), a UK-Italian citizen, has been producing artwork for over a decade, mostly in gouache and watercolour. Her works are inspired by cultural travels, psychological encounters and emotions; exposing her truth and inviting the viewer’s truth in return.
