“The Theory of Everything” is loosely based on the idea that everything is interconnected by forces we cannot see (also known as Quantum Theory). The scene of sitting and standing figures developed organically, with no pre-conceived composition. It was only after an artist’s block and skimming a book of Caravaggio’s paintings that I decided to add the cherubs.
I’m definitely not a religious person but I do like the concept of cherubs: these fat little baby angels messing with people in their day-to-day lives; Even more so that this was/is an acceptable way to explain the unexplainable until science could take over.
By playfully inserting cherubs into a modern landscape and including lines indicating energy and motion, my goal with this painting is to visually merge the religious and scientific ideologies. I believe that in many scenarios Religion and Science are trying to describe the same things, they simply use opposing terminology/language. The title of this painting is a cheeky nod to the renowned scientist/atheist Stephen Hawking’s book titled “Theory of Everything”.
