A Classic Arita Vase and Cover
Edo period (late 17th century)
The oviform vase with slightly everted short neck, decorated in underglaze blue with three shaped panels, one depicting a willow hanging over from the cliff, one with two ho-o birds amongst peony issuing from rockwork, the other with chrysanthemum and wild pink, divided by karahana [stylised Chinese floral scrolls], the shoulder with three panels containing peony sprays against a ground of key-fret design, the shoulder and foot with the bands of geometric designs, the domed cover similarly decorated with three panels containing peony sprays against a key-fret ground, the finial with chrysanthemum flowerhead
