Lot Essay
This type of Japanese-made tobacco box would have been made to order by one of the Dutch employees working on the island of Deshima during this period. As is the case with other examples, it is likely that the designs on these boxes were based on European engravings.
The owner of such boxes would sometimes have his name or initials inscribed in gold lacquer, replicating his signature, or a dedication to a friend. However these inscriptions are not always easy to decipher as the Japanese lacquerer, most likely unfamiliar with the script, would have to copy written models or signed documents to make the inscription, which can sometimes result in the characters being difficult to read.
