An Imari Charger
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Decorated in iron-red, green and black enamels and gilt on underglaze blue with a central roundel depicting an archaic flower vase, containing peony and chrysanthemum sprays, on a balustraded terrace, the wide rim with two large shaped panels, one depicting Japanese pheasants and their chicks beside a stream beneath pine and cherry, another depicting various birds perched in a blossoming plum tree, two small panels containing fish in a stream, all on a ground of peony sprays and karakusa, the reverse with sprays of peony, plum and chrysanthemum
