An Imari Charger
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Decorated in iron-red, black enamel and gilt on underglaze blue with a central roundel depicting two ho-o birds amongst blossoming cherry and hydrangea issuing from rockwork, encircled to the rim with a wide band depicting two pairs of ho-o birds amongst various trees and flowers including pine and peony, scrolling clouds with karahana [Chinese floral scrolls] on an underglaze blue ground, the reverse with sprays of peony, chrysanthemum and pomegranate
