A Lacquer Plaque depicting the Crucifix
Attributed to the Sasaya Worshop (Kyoto), Edo period (late 18th - 19th century)
A pewter plate, the face with a black lacquer ground enriched at the centre with mura-hirame [sprinkled flattened nuggets of gold] and decorated with gold, silvery grey and shibuichi coloured takamaki-e [high relief lacquer], depicting Christ on a vine-wreathed cross and the inscription 'INRI' [Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum] on a scrap of paper nailed to the top of the cross, the top of the plaque with hanging loop, the reverse black lacquer
