A Pair of Imari Chargers
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Each decorated in iron-red, black enamel, pink wash and gilt on underglaze blue with a central roundel depicting a tripod flower vase containing peony and chrysanthemum sprays, surrounded by further flowers, encircled to the rim with a wide band with two shaped panels, each containing another panel with a ho-o bird and peony on a red ground, on a blue ground with peony and karakusa, divided by two karashishi [lion dogs] playing beside peony and two birds perched in a cherry tree beside another peony
