Suffering from gout, Kuniyoshi died on the 5th day of the 3rd month of Bunkyu 1 (14th April 1861). In this memorial portrait, Kuniyoshi is shown followed by his pupil Yoshifusa (active 1837–1860), who is carrying a bundle of his master's artists materials. Two of the poems are by Kuniyoshi's life-long friend the Kyoka poet Umeya Kakuju.
