The painting presents well in natural light, with the modeling of the face wel preserved. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The relining process has caused some thinning to the upper paint glazes. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface. The paint remains stable. In natural light a minor area of restoration can be seen to the right of the sitter's throat. Examination under UV light reveals some historic retouching to the flesh tones and the hair line There is a cloudy, uneven varnish that precludes further examination.
