Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In overall fair country house condition. With the inevitable knocks, marks, losses, scratches and shrinkage cracks, consistent with age and use. As stated re-gilt. The current gilding rather dark and discoloured overall and with rubbing, chipped losses and knocks, as expected. The gilding rubbed revealing dark bole and white gesso in places - overall the gilding would benefit from a light surface clean. Evidence of historic but apparently inactive woodworm to the timber throughout and with associated timber losses. As stated the urns and lower bases of later date - the urns heavily craked- one urn with large shrinkage split running vertically through the rim to the socle, which would benefit from securing. The urns rather unstable on their socles overall and would benefit from securing. The lower later tripartite base to one with large shrinkage split to the foliate-clasped plinth. Damages to the applied gilt-composition throughout but most noticably to one torchere with losses to the anthemion frieze, the upper tier and to the legs. The three column supports rather unstable and bowed in places due to the weight of the urns - these also would benefit from securing. There is evidence of repaired breaks to two supports. Overall structurally secure but would benefit from sympathetic restoration.
As stated the urns fitted for electricity. Electrical components appear to be complete but must be reconditioned prior to use, regardless of whether the lot is shown lit or in working condition in the catalogue. We strongly advise that the item is reconditioned by an appropriately qualified electrician prior to any intended use.
