PENDULE SQUELETTE D’EPOQUE LOUIS XVI
Louis Stanislas Xavier de France, Comte de Provence, younger brother of Louis XVI, was called “Monsieur” when Louis XVI became king. Monsieur however then became King of France and Navarre as Louis XVIII, from July 1815 to September 1824.
Other important clocks by Lepaute de Bellefontaine. Lepaute was one of the most famous clockmakers of his time. He notably made the mechanism to a large ebony longcase clock constructed by Nicolas Petit (1732 - 1791) now housed in the Royal Collection in Buckingham Palace (Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 30010). He also received a commission in 1777 from Stanislas Augustus Poniatowski, King of Poland for a monumental longcase clock decorated with his coat of arms.

The catalogue illustration of this stunning clock is accurate.
This clock is in very good overall condition, with only the inevitable minor marks and scratches due to age, use and handling.
The handles are very nicely engraved; as visible, the edges of the fleur-de-lys on the main handle have been cut.
The gilding of the clock is very nice and has a rich deep tone; it is a bit rubbed on the base.
There are minute casting flaws. The marble base show minute damage to the edges and there is an old restoration. The enamel and the gilt decoration on the dial are especially delicate -and beautiful-.
Overall an absolutely beautiful clock of the highest quality, especially in terms of model, of gilding, of enamelled decoration…
