A BRONZE FIGURE ENTITLED ‘IN DER NOT FRIßT DER TEUFEL FLIEGEN’ (BEELZEBUB, LORD OF THE FLIES), BY CARL AUGUST WILHELM SOMMER

After receiving academic instruction at the Beaux-Arts in Munich and Stuttgart, the German artist Carl August Wilhelm Sommer (1839-1921) continued his training in Vienna, Budapest and Rome. Usually known for his classical mythological subjects, he was inspired by demonology for this sculpture of Beelzebub. Also known as the Lord of the Flies, in the Semitic world he is a fallen angel turned Prince of demons. Among the various monstrous aspects he takes on in the biblical texts, the sculptor chose to depict him with his most emblematic attributes, including flies, bat wings and a lion's tail.

Apres avoir reçu une formation académique aux Beaux-Arts de Munich et de Stuttgart, l’artiste allemand Carl August Wilhelm Sommer (1839-1921) poursuit sa formation à Vienne, à Budapest et à Rome. D’ordinaire connu pour ses sujets mythologiques classiques, il s’est inspiré de la démonologie pour cette sculpture représentant Belzébuth. Également appelé le Seigneur des mouches, il est, dans le monde sémite, un ange déchu devenu Prince des démons. Parmi les différents aspects monstrueux qu’il revêt dans les textes bibliques, le sculpteur a choisi de le représenter pourvu de ses attributs les plus emblématiques parmi lesquels les mouches, les ailes de chauve-souris et la queue de lion.
