A BRONZE GROUP ENTITLED 'GLORIA VICTIS', BY MARIUS-JEAN-ANTONIN MERCIÉ (1845-1916) AND CAST BY BARBEDIENNE

When the Franco-Prussian war broke out in 1870, Antoine Mercié, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1868, was a resident at the Villa Medici. While the start of the fighting inspired him to create a composition of an allegorical figure and a triumphant soldier, France's subsequent defeat forced him to change his initial plan and to create the sculpture we know today. Completed in the summer of 1872, the plaster was first exhibited under the loggia of the Académie de France in Rome before being brought back to France by Mercié at the end of his stay in 1873. In Paris, the plaster was exhibited at the Salon of 1874 while the bronze cast by Thiebaut & fils was shown at the Salon of 1875.
In January 1877, two years after the public success of this bronze, the rights to reproduce this model were given to the Barbedienne foundry ; by whom our sculpture was cast.

Lorsque la guerre franco-prussienne éclate en 1870, Antoine Mercié, gagnant du Prix de Rome de 1868, est pensionnaire à la villa Médicis. Si le début des combats lui inspire une composition formée d’une figure allégorique et d’un soldat triomphants, l’annonce de la défaite de la France l’oblige à modifier son projet initial pour la composition de Gloria Victis que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. Achevé au cours de l’été 1872, le plâtre est d’abord exposé sous la loggia de l’Académie de France à Rome avant d’être rapporté en France par Mercié à la fin de son séjour en 1873. À Paris, il est exposé au Salon de 1874 avant que sa fonte en bronze, éditée par Thiebaut & fils, soit présentée au Salon de 1875.
Deux ans après le succès public de ce bronze, en janvier 1877, les droits de reproduction de ce modèle sont réservés à la fonderie Barbedienne dont notre sculpture résulte.
