De forme légèrement conique, le pied ciselé d'oves, le corps repoussé de lobes en forme de gouttes ciselées de motifs cuirs sur fond amati encadrant des réserves losangiques gravés au centre d'une fleur, repris sur le couvercle, l'anse appliquée d'une bande perlée et avec appui-pouce en buste, le couvercle à charnière avec prise en vase appliqué de trois consoles et sommé d'une boule sur terrasse cannelée, gravé au centre d'armoiries (hachurées) et des initiales AZ/DZ, poinçons sur les fonds: ville, maître-orfèvre et striche

A GERMAN SILVER-GILT TANKARD
MARK OF ESAIAS ZUR LINDEN, NUREMBERG, 1609-1629
Of slightly tapered shape, the foot-rim chased with an ovolo border, the body and cover embossed with drop-shaped lobed framing lozenge-shaped reserves engraved with flower, the scroll handle applied with beaded band, with figural thumbpiece, the cover with vase finial applied with three scrolls and topped by a ball on fluted terrace, engraved in one reserve with a coat-of-arms (hatched) and initials AZ/DZ, marked underneath: town, maker and assay scrap

Esaias zur Linden was one of Nuremberg's greatest silversmiths and is best known for his boat-shaped drinking cups. Other examples by him of similar tankards, typical of the period, are known and Christie's sold one in London, from the Marber collection, 23 May 2019, lot 460.

Esaias zur Linden est surtout connu pour ses coupes à boire en forme de bateau et compte parmi les plus grands orfèvres de Nuremberg. On lui connaît d'autres exemplaire de ce modèle de tankard typique de la période et Christie's en a vendu un à Londres, ancienne collection Marber, 23 mai 2019, lot 460.
