HANS ROTTENHAMMER, VIRGIN AND CHILD, OIL ON COPPER

The Bavarian painter Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625) trained in Munich under Hans Donauer (c.1569-1644). After a brief stay in Treviso, he settled in Venice in 1591, where he became a member of the Painter's Guild. He specialised in very detailed cabinet painting of mythological and religious subjects often executed on copper. These were sometimes destined for inclusion in important pieces of furniture. In 1606 he returned to Germany, where he worked in both Augsburg and Munich.
