Karel Philips Spierincks (1609-1639) was a Flemish painter whose work shows the classical influence of Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). Active in Italy, his work consists principally of mythological subjects, with putti a recurring iconographic theme. In the present painting they can be seen playing with a donkey, the main figure in The Golden Ass, written by Apuleius (c.125-170), which tells the story of Lucius, who is accidentally transformed into a donkey by his mistress Photis.

Le tableau a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage ancien un peu fort ayant pu tasser la matière picturale par endroits. Le tableau est sur un châssis rapporté, à clés. Le support est stable.

A l'œil nu, le tableau est encrassé. On constate des petites griffures : une première de 9 cm. partant du bord inférieur, une deuxième à 13 cm. du bord inférieur, une troisième à 13 cm. du bord droit. Le vernis est ancien et un peu chancis au niveau de l'âne.

A l'UV, on constate des retouches ponctuelles récentes au niveau des putti en bas, au centre, ainsi que dans l'âne. On constate une retouche un peu plus débordante au niveau de la griffure partant du bord inférieur. Le tableau est sous un vernis ancien, épais, encrassé dissimulant d'anciennes campagnes de restauration.

La matière picturale est stable.

Dans un cadre en bois et stuc dorés de style XVIIIe (approx. 70 x 60 cm.).

The painting has been subject to relining, it is held under tension and remains stable. The relining process has flattened the more impasted areas of the composition. The stretcher is supported by keys to the corners.

The painting carries some surface dirt. In natural light some fine scratches can be seen, one of 9 cm. that extends up from the lower edge, one of 1.5 cm. on the donkey’s proper right foreleg and one of 1.5 cm. above the head of the putto riding the donkey. The varnish is old and has blanched slightly over the donkey.

Examination under UV light reveals scattered retouching in the putti and the donkey. There is some restoration associated with the aforementioned scratch extending from the lower edge. The old, dirty varnish precludes a more in depth examination.

In an 18^thcentury style giltwood and plaster frame (approx. 70 x 60 cm.).
