Cette personnification d'une allumette fut commandée au peintre Jean-Jacques Scherrer (1855-1916), formé à la peinture académique à l'école des beaux-arts de Paris et dans l'atelier d'Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), dans le cadre de l'Exposition universelle de Paris de 1900. Il lui avait été confié de décorer le Pavillon des Manufactures de l'État (fig. 1), dessiné sur les plans d'Adrien Chancel (1853-1901), en reconstituant l'histoire du tabac depuis Louis XV jusque 1900. Deux médaillons appartenant à ce décor peint représentant le Tabac et les Allumettes sous la forme de deux figures féminines sont passés en vente chez Christie's à Londres le 30 avril 2014 (lots 133 et 134).
