FURTHER DETAILS
JEAN-JACQUES SCHERRER, THE MATCHES, OIL ON CANVAS, A FRAGMENT, WITHOUT FRAME, SIGNED

This personification of a match was commissioned to the painter Jean-Jacques Scherrer (1855-1916), who studied academic painting at the école des beaux-arts de Paris and under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), as part of the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition. He was asked to decorate the Pavillon des Manufactures de l'État (fig. 1), designed by Adrien Chancel (1853-1901), by depicting the history of tobacco from Louis XV to 1900. Two medallions belonging to this painted ensemble representing Tobacco and Matches as two female figures were sold at Christie's in London on 30 April 2014 (lots 133 and 134).
