A BRONZE FIGURE OF PHRYNE, ALEXANDRE FALGUIÈRE (1831-1900) AFTER JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME (1824-1904), ON A MARBLE SWIVEL BASE

Alexandre Falguière often found the inspiration for his sculptures in famous contemporary paintings, as is the case for La Source, based on a work by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Paris, Musée d'Orsay, inv. RF 219). In the same spirit, this bronze takes the central female figure from the painting by the Orientalist Jean-Léon Gérôme, Phryné devant l'Aréopage (Hamburg, Kunsthalle, inv. HK-1910), at the request of the painter himself and the Parisian dealer Adolphe Goupil (1806-1893), buoyed by the success of the painting. Although the position of the legs has been slightly altered, Gérôme, far from minding, is said to have adjusted Falguière's plaster model himself.

After the first marble versions were produced in 1868, bronzes of the model were made, signed ‘Falguière’ and more rarely ‘Gérôme’. The inscription ‘GOUPIL & Cie / Editeurs’ confirms that our bronze is a copy marketed by the famous dealer.
