FURTHER DETAILS
ATTRIBUTED TO GÉRÔME DANIEL (1649-AFTER 1728), THE ANNUNCIATION, OIL ON CANVAS

With its bold colours and precise still life in the foreground, this painting evokes the work of the Provencal painter Gérôme Daniel (1649-after 1728). A pupil of Reynaud Levieux (1613-1699), he moved to Aix-en-Provence in 1681, where he produced a number of imposing altar paintings, including one in the church of Saint-Denis in Ventabren and La vision du bienheureux Elzéar, painted around 1685 and now hung in the church of La Madeleine in Aix-en-Provence (see M.-C. Gloton, La peinture en Provence au XVIIe siècle, Marseille, 1978, p. 30).
