A BRONZE GROUP REPRESENTING CLEOPATRA AND LESBIE, AFTER CHARLES CUMBERWORTH AND CAST BY THE MARCHAND FOUNDRY

Charles Cumberworth (1811-1852) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1829 before making his debut at the Salon in 1833 with a Bust of a Child (no. 3245). He went on to work for the firm Susse, founded in 1758. The bronze presented here was cast by the Parisian foundryman Léon Marchand (1831-1899). Founded in 1822, this foundry had a large exhibition gallery, mainly with furniture bronzes, torchères, vases, statuettes and groups.
