WORKSHOP OF HYACINTHE RIGAUD, FULL-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF LOUIS XIV, OIL ON CANVAS, WITHOUT FRAME

Universally lauded upon its official presentation to the court of Versailles in January of 1702, the portrait of Louis XIV (1638-1715) in high royal dress (Paris, musée du Louvre, inv. no. 1492), and not in coronation robes, as he is sometimes described, singlehandedly personifies the Grand Siècle and the Ancient Régime’s absolute rule within the collective memory.

This was a great honour for this Catalan painter, a subject of the Spanish crown at birth, who would, once again, be bestowed the monarch’s highest distinction; frequenting him at court and painting him from life. The artist had left his birthplace of Perpignan and had settled in Paris after a brief stay in Lyon. His talents as a portraitist had earned him prestigious commissions in all the towns where he had stayed; by the time he reached Paris, Europe’s elite would turn to him to have their likeness captured. Amongst his models we can list Frédéric IV of Denmark (1671-1730) and the Doge of Genoa, Gian Francesco II Brignole of Sale (1695-1760), as well as major figures from the reign of Louis XIV, the regent Philippe d’Orléans (1674-1723), and Louis XV (1710-1774), without forgetting the important artists whose portraits populated the galerie des portraits, like Desjardins (1637-1694), Le Brun (1619-1690) and Bourdon (1616-1671); an illustrious list which highlights the prestige of Rigaud’s clientele.
It is as a result of this popularity amongst noble and aristocratic models that Louis XIV turned to Rigaud, from whom he had already commissioned a portrait of his grandson, Philippe d’Anjou (1683-1746), called to the throne of Spain.

Eclipsing all previous representations of the sovereign, the likeness created by our painter of Catalan origin was by far the most reproduced. The model’s advanced age (73 years old) disappears under the pomp of the composition. The old man, whose vigorous legs anchor him in the composition, wears a coat adorned with the fleur de lys, whilst dominating a still life composed of the regalia, the secular symbols of power. Charlemagne’s sword, nicknamed Joyeuse (Paris, musée du Louvre), appears underneath his coat, the sceptre of his grandfather Henri IV (1553-1589) is used by the model as a cane, and the hand of justice and the royal crown are placed on a heavy velour cushion in the left of the composition. The order of the Holy Spirit, created during the reign of Henri III (1551-1589) -the most prestigious order of the Ancient Régime- is held by a heavy chain around the monarch’s lace collar. The vertical composition acts as a stage for the king, who by then had singlehandedly ruled France for over a decade.

Rigaud’s accounts book lists no less than fifty-six workshop copies executed between 1701 and 1721, whilst painters such as François Albert Stiémart (1680-1740) were specially commissioned by the administration of the king’s buildings to fuel the image’s wide dissemination across parliament, sovereign courts, academies, schools, universities, municipalities and foreign courts. For the best versions, like our picture which shows only very slight variations from its prototype at the Louvre, it is often risky to arbitrate between a workshop copy executed by a collaborator, and a version executed by court-appointed copyist.
