HANS WERNER SCHMIDT (1859-1950), IN THE PADDOCK OR THE WINNER, OIL ON CANVAS LAID DOWN ON BOARD, SIGNED, INSCRIBED AND DATED

Horse racing was a theme that fascinated artists in the 19th century. While some artists tried to express the speed of horses in motion, others focused on the new fashion for racing in modern society. Hans Werner Schmidt (1859-1950) decided to depict the moment after the race when the winning jockey is congratulated by the crowd. He offers us a snapshot of this sporting and social event, where punters and onlookers flock together and top hats and straw boaters mingle. Though better known for his historical compositions and military scenes, another equestrian composition in the form of an engraving in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. RP-P-1913-3704).
